Living with Debt in Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is an island in the Maritimes with only an estimated 145,000 residents.
The most dominant industry in PEI is agriculture with 1/3 of Canada’s potatoes being produced there.
PEI has the highest provincial retail sales tax in the country (10%). As of 2010 the minimum wage in PEI was $9 per/hour which is higher than the other maritime provinces.
PEI was one of the only provinces that didn’t experience any economic turbulence during the recent recession. Higher output in aquaculture and “higher lobster landings” more than offset a decline in agriculture. In addition Government service industries and retail trade also supported the economy. Even the manufacturing sector continues to see small but consistent growth.
